For some, July 4th just won’t be the same.
For Ocracoke, Avon, and Hatteras Village, the fireworks displays have been cancelled for this year, due to new regulations, coupled with lack of funding and some other factors.
It’s not apparent if last year’s explosion that killed four people and severely injured one, in Ocracoke, is the reason for the cancellations. Workers were preparing for a show near the ferry docks in the village when the truck they were unloading exploded.
Although, fireworks won’t be going off, other activities are planned as the Ocracoke Business and Civic Association is exploring having another event on the evening of July 4th to replace the fireworks. There are going to be many other things to do, such as, a parade and a day long worth of activities.
Please Note: Fireworks are illegal on Hatteras and Ocracoke. Even sparklers are illegal because, the dunes are very dry, and they can catch fire.
