Cape Hatteras Lighthouse News

The Cape Hatteras Lighthouse will open for the public on april 16.
It will be a “Fee-free” day as it has been in the past for those local community members to climb the tower.

Things You’ll Need To Know, Before You Go

The climb is a long and tough climb, with 248 steps, it can feel like you are climbing a 12 story building but, every 31 steps there is a landing, and there is a railing on one side of the stairs, so that you can stop for a short rest if necessary.

There is no air conditioning, and it can get very hot, humid, and it can sometimes be really noisy, so be prepared. If you have any heart conditions, respiratory, or other medical conditions, you really should think about whether to climb or not.

There are rules for climbing:

• Children must be at least 42 inches tall.
• Children must be capable of climbing all steps on their own.
• No person may be lifted or carried.
• Children under the age of 12 years old must be escorted by an adult.
• Running, jumping, or stomping on stairs and landings is prohibited.
• Do not eat, drink, smoke, or chew tobacco.
